Second Officer to Plead Guilty in Shooting Cover Up in New Orleans

A former New Orleans police detective was arrested yesterday in conjunction with a shooting and subsequent cover up during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Jeffrey Lehrmann was charged with knowing about a felony and failing to report it to the proper authorities. Lehrmann is the second New Orleans police officer to plead guilty in the case.

Lehrmann was charged in the U.S. District Court in New Orleans on Thursday. He faces up to three years in prison for the felony charges. Court documents have shown that Lehrmann was also named in another police investigation involving the planting of a gun at a crime scene. These charges are not being addressed in this case.

The shooting in question occurred on the Danziger Bridge in New Orleans shortly after the hurricane hit. Police opened fire on unarmed citizens. Two people were killed and four others injured during the incident. An investigation of the shootings was immediately enacted by the Department of Justice. A full scale investigation has been taking place since September of 2005.

Lehrmann left the New Orleans Police Department shortly after the incident in 2006. He currently resides in Phoenix and is employed as a special agent for the U.S. Immigration and Enforcement Office of Phoenix.

And we wonder why we don’t really trust law enforcement. How was Lehrmann allowed to work for the U.S. Immigration and Enforcement Office of Phoenix? Are there no background checks?

I guess he has gone from shooting helpless Katrina vitims to hunting unarmed Mexicans trying to enter the U.S. He shouldn’t even have a job for the U.S. Immigration and Enforcement Office after committing that type of crime in Louisiana. There must be a problem with the sharing of information or something like that…

They protect themselves first, now he will still draw pay long as he isn’t in jail. Let that happen to a regular citizen, just jailed awaiting trial, no money, loses house, car, etc.etc. police unions are just as bad, or worse than any of them.

Wow! This is truely terrifying. How do they expect the people of New Orleans to trust cops after this. This was supposed to be a new a better police department after they were shaken up in recent years for corruption. I appears that they have much more work to do. We need manditory sentencing laws just for police and judges who grossly violate the people’s trust. The amount of time they will receive is not ENOUGH!

No excuse for his actions and he should go to jail like the rest of us would. You can bet he won’t! Rick, I feel for you man. I’ve travelled all over this most wonderful and great country of ours. In my travels I’ve found that scum comes in all sizes, shapes, genders, and colors. We shouldn’t have to worry about this we a cop comes calling. He or she should be able to put all political views aside and do their jobs to the letter of the law. I hope New Orleans truely rise to new heights of lawfulness and decency…
