If you haven't been using Mozilla's Firefox web browser, you have missed a chance at ad-free browsing. New users will be "treated" to select content on the new or blank page. Current users see their nine most frequented websites which is designed to give them a quick path to the pages they are most likely to visit. However, that was then.
New users will be fed a host of advertising content that Mozilla expects will be relevant to them. However, if a user is new to Firefox, how will Mozilla know what select ad content will be useful? For now, it appears that the ads will be limited to the blank page.
"Their tiles -- those nine rectangles that populate over time with the most frequent and recent websites they visit -- are empty," Mozilla said in a blog this week. "The new tab page isn’t delivering any value for them."
There's no talk of deploying annoying banner ads in the browser which would certainly give it a cheap shareware feel.
"The sponsored tiles will be clearly labeled as such, while still leading to content we think users will enjoy," Mozilla said.
Mozilla claims the move is about adding value to their wallets. As you were, it is about adding value to their users' browsing experience. Again, the ads will be limited to their handpicked partners. There's no clear word yet on what factors, beyond money, will contribute to a "partner" being handpicked. Understandably, Mozilla needs new revenue streams. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with their broad base of users and developers.
