A message in a bottle that was thrown in the ocean waters almost 30 years ago has managed to surface on a beach in Croatia.

The handwritten message was created by a man named Jonathon of Nova Scotia and addressed to a woman he considers a friend called Mary. In his message, dated 1985, Jonathan praises Mary as a terrific person and says this message is the fulfillment of his promise to write to her. It also expresses the hope that the two will stay in touch.

Scientists say that if Jonathon did launch his message in a bottle by throwing it into the Atlantic Ocean waters off the coast of his native Nova Scotia, the bottle managed to complete an amazing 28 year journey. After leaving the Atlantic Ocean, the bottle would have traveled through the Strait of Gibraltar prior to crossing the Alboran Sea.

It then traveled around the coastline of Italy before entering the Mediterranean Sea, the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea before being deposited into the Neretva River which led to its discovery in Croatia.

A group of surfers who were spending a few hours cleaning trash off the beach discovered the tiny glass historic time capsule.

“Mary, you really are a great person. I hope we can keep in correspondence. I said I would write. Your friend always, Jonathon, Nova Scotia, 1985,” said the message, which the daily carried in English.

Reddit user bobica88 posted an image of the alleged note on a photo-sharing service.
