“We’re receiving lots of calls for this one,” a dispatcher says.

“Front end of the bus has significant damage, we have multiple patients on the ground,” says the first paramedic on scene to the dispatcher.

“Upgrade this to a mass casualty… I have about six code blacks and at least three, or four, code fours, on the ground.”

“We have a two-storey bus, front end of the bus is missing,” the paramedic says.

According to the latest reports, six people are dead after a Via Rail train slammed into an Ottawa transit bus that apparently and inexplicably crashed through the crossing gates in southwest Ottawa on Wednesday morning.

Officials say 31 people were transported to areas hospitals, where one person died. Ten passengers are listed as critical.

Five were declared dead at the scene.

Ottawa police say an Ottawa bus driver and four passengers are dead following a crash between a bus and VIA Rail train near the Fallowfield station in Barrhaven, south of Ottawa, Tuesday morning.

There were multiple injuries as well.

Witnesses say the bus appeared to ignore warning signals at the crossing.

Ottawa's Fire Department says at least five people have died after a collision between a city bus and Via Rail train in the city's southwest end on Wednesday morning.

David Hugill a passagner on the VIA train called the scene "horrible."

"It's horrible. What can I say? It was really undramatic on the train. It certainly didn't feel like it was an incident of that magnitude from where we were sitting. What can I say? It's a brutal, brutal thing. We're fragile little creatures." - Hugill told CBC News.

Spokesman Mark Messier says alll the fatalites and major injuries are to passengers from the red double-decker bus. Messier says no one on the derailed train was badly hurt.

The OC Transpo bus collided with the train, near Fallowfield Rd and Woodroffe Ave, close to Fallowfield Station around 8:50am.

The Train was Train 51 which left Laval, Quebec around 6:40am. It's end point was to be Toronto around 1pm.
