Loretta Saunders case update

Updated

 on

Halifax Police have found a local taxi driver who was near the apartment building on the day Saint Mary's University student Loretta Saunders was reportedly last seen. Detectives with the department's major
crimes unit have questioned the driver, but it is unknown if the interview produced any information that may help locate the 26-year-old Saunders, who has been missing since February 13th. The last contact Saunders had with anyone was with her sister Delilah, whom she sent a short text to on February 14th.

On Tuesday, police arrested Saunders's roommates, 25-year-old Blake Leggette and 28-year-old Victoria Henneberry just outside of Windsor, Ontario, in the town of Harrow. They had been driving Saunders's car at the time of their arrest. Both were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. Leggette was also charged with fraud for allegedly using Saunders's bank card. The two also had outstanding warrants from Halifax and Calgary.

Numerous volunteers have spread across Halifax in an attempt to locate Saunders. At least 1,200 posters with Saunders's picture are expected to be put up throughout the city. Donations in excess of $11,000 dollars have come in to help cover the cost of the posters and for travel expenses for the Saunders family to come to Halifax.

Saunders is an Inuk who comes from Newfoundland and Labrador. At the time of her disappearance, she was writing a thesis on murdered and missing aboriginal women. She is described as 5'7, 120 pounds with fair skin and light brown hair worn straight. Saunders is also three months pregnant and has been taking methadone to help treat her drug addiction. Anyone with information on Loretta Saunders's whereabouts should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
