Gaining ground: The coyote closes in on a runner during the cross country race
PHONEIX–A coyote decided to try to see if it could finish first in a cross country championship at the high school level in Phoenix this past week.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association Cross Country State Championships are held in this Arizona capstone city at a golf course each fall.
This year, the animal was an unexpected surprise.
The coyote, which had a huge grin-like look on its face, wended its way into the 5k running course about a mile and a half in by bursting in on the race’s front runner, Tuscon High School Senior Harvey Nelson.

Nelson was taken aback but continued running, with the wild canine seeming to just fit right into the mix.
The coyote stuck to Nelson’s side for about 50 meters but then veered off, moving back in the direction from which it came.

The happening was unusual, with no event like it on record, nationally. Never before has an animal attempted to run alongside runners at a marathon or race, at least none has been reported.
Though a short run, the animal seemed playful and alert as it popped in on the scene, seeing the whole event as a fun way to interact with the human world. No more sightings of the animal have been reported since the incident.
