The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano (The Roman Observer) has run an investigative report which concludes that popular comic book heroes such as Batman, The Hulk, and even Superman may have been Catholic.
The tongue-in-cheek story found an instance where the Hulk was seen with a Catholic Rosary in hand. If it is true that the temperamental green giant was in fact a Roman Catholic, it would be curious to see how many "Hail Mary's" and "Apostles' Creeds" he would be required to utter at the church alter following one of his "hulk smash" neighborhood trashing rage binges.
The senior journalist in the report, Gaetano Vallini, said that mild-mannered Bruce Banner AKA The Hulk married his sweetheart in a Church wedding officiated by a Catholic Priest.
'Is it enough for a person to have a rosary in his hand to be defined a Catholic?
'Bruce Banner, the incredible green man, in fact married his beloved Betty Ross in a church and a Catholic priest presided at the ceremony.
'There are other indications dispersed among the hundreds of comic strips dedicated to him that are said to unequivocally reveal his faith.'
The report found the demonic looking character known as "The Nightcrawler" actually refers to his Catholic faith and sports Christian-themed tattoos on his body, but it's doubtful his priest would approve of the tats.
While it is unlikely that anyone on Krypton was a practicing Catholic, Superman's adoptive mother was a Catholic and taught her son to pray. Was he saying prayers to one of the many approved Saints? The success of the latest Superman film inspired the report.
