Judge poisoned with antifreeze, wife in jail.
Carla Rae Hague, 71 and wife of Judge Charles Hague, is in jail after being accused of poisoning her husband with antifreeze. Hague is expected to be charged with attempted murder and the tampering of evidence in relation to her case.
On September 15th, Charles Hague was brought into a hospital and then transferred via helicopter to a Cleveland clinic. It was revealed within a few days that the Judge had been poisoned by antifreeze. The Hague family called in to complain. Carla Rae Hague was arrested on December 2nd. The authorities have declined to answer questions on what led them to the arrest of Mrs. Hague. Family friends were blindsided by this bizarre development.
Judge Hague is recovering at home while his wife is imprisoned. The authorities believe that the case will go directly to a grand jury by December 18th. There it will be decided whether or not there is enough evidence available to charge Mrs. Hague with the intentional poisoning of her husband.
According to the Sheriff’s office, Judge Hague was brought to a hospital in Ashtabula County on Sept. 15 and life flighted that same day to the Cleveland Clinic. Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department received a phone call from members of the Hague family on Sept. 19 to file a complaint when it was found from hospital tests that high levels of ethylene glycol, better known as antifreeze, was found in the judge’s body.
“The investigation found that Judge Hague had been intentionally poisoned,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.
The Hague family have been mum so far when reporters attempted to reach them, declining to comment and asking for respect for their family's wishes.
Carla Rae Hagues lawyer could be reached for comment.
The Ohio judge’s wife is currently be held at the county jail while her husband is recovering at home.
“The investigation is just simply an investigation,” the sheriff said. “It is a little bit more sensitive because of him being a sitting judge, but we would handle it the same way no matter who it would be in an investigation.”
