Kansas City, Kansas - Anthony V. Bruno had just gotten married 8 hours earlier when he was shot dead by an off-duty police officer responding to a call that Bruno assaulted a taxi cab driver over a dispute about the fare. Bruno, age 26, had worked as a fireman for six years and was heading to a downtown hotel following his wedding celebration. When he was approached by the police officer, he got into a scuffle with him and pounced on the officer.
According to the police report, Bruno began striking the officer multiple times to the head and face. In an act of desperation, the officer discharged one round of his sidearm into Bruno killing him. The officer believed he was in mortal danger. The medical report suggests he was correct. The officer suffered what were termed "severe" wounds to his head and face. He has since been released from the hospital to recover at home. Once the swelling has diminished, the officer will undergo surgery to correct the facial wounds.
It is believed that alcohol played a factor in Bruno's violent behavior. His family remembers him as a dedicated firefighter who served the community well. His death is viewed as a senseless tragedy.
