Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Douglas Adams has been left quadriplegic following a prank gone horribly wrong. Adams was on a hunting trip with two cousins of his wife and went to relieve himself in a portable toilet. His companions decided to shake the toilet as a prank, but the unit was not properly secured at the base and was on a slope. The unit tipped over and Adams suffered neck injuries that have left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.
Facing a lifetime of care as a quadriplegic, he and his wife sued naming the cousins, toilet manufacturer and installer as defendants. The manufacturer was named in the lawsuit for failure to provide the ground spikes to secure the unit to the ground. The unit had holes in it for that purpose.
The installer was named for placing the unit on a slope and using wood to keep it in a delicate balance. The cousins were named for the prank that sparked the incident. During the trial, the installer and manufacturer attempted to lay blame on the cousins alone.
Rather than have the case go to trial, they settled on a $5 million award to the plaintiff. Hopefully, that amount of money will be sufficient to provide for health care expenses and some quality of life.
