3-Year Old Girl Missing in Freezing Temperatures Saved by Dog

The actions of a dog in Poland are being credited with saving the life of a 3-year old girl who had wandered away from home and had to spend the night outdoors in sub-freezing temperatures.

The girl, identified only by her first name of Julia, had been seen earlier in the day playing in the backyard of her home with a black stray dog. When she disappeared, hundreds of volunteers searched the mountaineous area in and around her home in Pierzwin.

They also deployed a police helicopter with infrared cameras and six search dogs to look for the girl.

Luckily, Julia was discovered the next morning with the dog curled up beside her in marshland not very far from her home.

Rescue officials say that the warmth provided by the loyal canine helped the young girl survive temperatures that dipped below the freezing level, the BBC reports. “For the whole night the animal was with the girl, it never left her. Remember, it was 5 degrees [23 degrees Fahrenheit] below zero and the child was wet,” local firefighter Grzegorz Szymanski said, adding that the dog helped keep the girl alive in the freezing temperatures.

The dog, who Julia’s grandmother says is her best friend, barked as rescue workers got closer, according to Reuters.

“This dog is the most important part of the story. He is a hero,” Szymanski told Reuters. “It is thanks to this dog that the girl survived the night.”

Julia was transported to the local hospital suffering from frostbite. No word if she and her family are planning on adopting the dog that saved her life.

Last year, a seven-month old dog was hailed as a hero after he pushed a 10-year-old boy out of the way of an oncoming truck and took the impact himself.

Carly Riley, from Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, was out for a walk with Geo, a German Shepherd-Collie mix, and her three sons, Charlie, Josh and Ben on Thursday when disaster struck, reported HaloPets.com

“Geo must have sensed it [the truck] as he leapt on Charlie and took him out the way. It could have wiped us all out. If it wasn’t for Geo I am 100 percent sure it would’ve been Charlie” Riley told DogHeirs.com

Geo sustained a broken leg, broken spine and internal injuries, but the veterinarians caring for him told iTV News that Geo will would make a full recovery.
