Women’s NCAA Hockey Brawl Sets Record for Most Penalties: video

Apparently, the old adage that "boys will be boys" needs a 21st century overhaul at least when it comes to women's hockey. The Friday night match between the ladies of Bemidji State and Ohio State turned ugly immediately after the buzzer sounded Bemidji State's 3-2 victory. While it isn't clear what sparked the melee, it is clear that it involved many players from both teams.

“I don’t really know what happened, to be quite honest,” Buckeyes coach Nate Handrahan said during the post-game press conference. “All I know is there were players taking liberties with our players. There was some chippiness throughout the course of the game.

“I’ve got to believe that our players, and as a staff, as a program, we’re not happy with teams celebrating on our ice surface and going off the ice yipping and hooting and hollering. What happened at the end of the game doesn’t happen often in women’s hockey.

“But I can tell you this: We’re happy to at least see our girls show some fight and some spirit. Outside of that, I think hockey in general is trying to get that stuff out of the game. We have our own issues to deal with.”

In the end, the score didn't change, but a new NCAA record for most penalties was set. The ladies racked up an impressive 303 penalty minutes which was far above the previous record of 268 set back in 2004 by the University of Maine and the University of Boston. Coach Nate Handrahan of the Ohio State Buckeyes made it clear that this type of rough stuff is something the NCAA wants removed from the sport, but he was impressed to see his players prove they have some fight in them. However, he would probably prefer they demonstrate that in their defense and scoring during the actual game.

In addition to the penalty minutes, 19 misconducts were handed out to players. There is no official word yet from Bemidji State regarding the record setting din.
