Basketball star Larry Bird received sad news regarding son Connor over the weekend as Bird's son was arrested after an argument with an ex-girlfriend escalated.

Connor Bird was charged with criminal mischief, battery with injury and intimidation with a deadly weapon after he tried to strike his former sweetheart twice with his car after she exited the vehicle and attempted to walk home on foot.

Bird also struck his ex-girlfriend by throwing a cell phone at her while the two were arguing earlier in the day at his apartment.

Police at Indiana University where the incidents allegedly took place also found that Bird was in possession of marijuana and added drug possession to the list of charges facing him.

Bird was able to post bail and is awaiting a trial date as yet unannounced. Bird's attorney said that his client considers the incident a private matter and expressed gratitude that no one sustained injuries in the scuffle.

"What has happened is a very private matter. We’re trying to resolve this as quickly as possible and we're all thankful no one was seriously injured," the lawyer told PEOPLE.
