HBO isn't known for giving up on a show after only two seasons, but poor ratings prompted the premium cable channel network to cancel its critically acclaimed half-hour show "Enlightened" on Wednesday, March 19th, after much fan and critic speculation.
The show is about 40-year-old Amy Jellicoe, played by Laura Dern, rebuilding her life after suffering through personal and professional heartbreaks and a nervous breakdown.
"Enlightened" was lauded for its superb writing, characterizations and plot, but efforts to gain a greater viewership failed. Only 130,000 viewers tuned in during its next-to-last episode and only 200,000 for the finale.
HBO initially released the show on Monday nights during primetime against popular non-subscription network shows. With Season 2, HBO moved it to Sunday nights at 9:30 PM, which again ran it against popular non-subscription dramas, comedies and sports.
In its statement, HBO called the decision “difficult.”
"It was a very difficult decision," HBO said in a statement. "We’ve decided not to continue Enlightened for a third season. We’re proud of the show, and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future."
