The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that it will recognize the many years of humanitarian service that actress Angelina Jolie has offered to the world when it bestows the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award on her in ceremonies November 16.

The 38 year old actress, who is engaged to actor Brad Pitt, has long been involved in a variety of social causes on the international scene and currently serves as a goodwill ambassador on behalf of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. She initially became involved in helping refugees after seeing firsthand the problems that they encountered while filming on location in Cambodia in 2001.

This is not the first honor from the Motion Picture Academy for Jolie, who won an Oscar in 1999 for her performance in the film "Girl, Interrupted". Jolie will receive the Hersholt Award in a Governors Awards ceremony held in Hollywood in mid November that will also honor two of her fellow actors with honorary Oscars.

In addition to Jolie's tribute, the Academy has announced it will recognize the lifelong achievements of actress Angela Lansbury and comedian/actor/writer Steve Martin. In addition, costume designer Piero Tosi will be recognized for his contributions to the film industry.
