Actor Michael Douglas appeared on British daytime TV to admit he misled the press and public about the seriousness of his 2010 cancer diagnosis. Discussing the diagnosis on ITV's This Morning with fellow actor Samuel L. Jackson, the Behind the Candelabra Emmy winner admitted he was diagnosed with tongue cancer and not throat cancer.
69 year old Douglas admitted in the interview he was worried about his health as he began a promotional tour for the 2010 movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Feeling unwell as his promotional duties were about to begin, Douglas discussed the situation with the movie's marketing team and his doctor. The doctor advised Douglas to explain he had throat cancer, as any surgery required for tongue cancer would have severely affected his career, with part of the actors jaw and tongue possibly being removed.
Discussing the subject as part of the UK's Male Cancer Awareness Week, Douglas explained his condition went unnoticed on a number of occasions before finally being diagnosed. Eventually, a Canadian doctor discovered a tumor at the base of the Basic Instinct star's tongue and diagnosed cancer. Douglas sparked controversy by claiming his cancer was caused by the sexually transmitted HPV virus and not by smoking.
