An encounter with a stranger during the recent Sundance Film Festival proved to be both haunting and prophetic for actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman. One of the publishers of Washington Life magazine, John Arundel, reported he didn't recognize Hoffman when he met him and when Arundel inquired about his profession, Hoffman bluntly told him, "I'm an addict." Arundel reports the 46-year old Oscar winner looked disoriented and disheveled while attending the prestigious entertainment event. It wasn't until Hoffman removed his hat that Arundel recognized him and Hoffman revealed "I just got out of rehab."
Two weeks after Arundel's haunting encounter with the troubled Hoffman, the actor was discovered on the bathroom floor of his New York apartment, dead from an apparent overdose of heroin. The syringe was still sticking out of Hoffman's arm and his apartment was littered with at least 70 used and full bags of the lethal drug, along with almost two dozen syringes.
According to sources close to his long-time girlfriend, she had insisted he leave their home in December because the father of three had begun using drugs again despite numerous attempts at rehabilitation.
Friends told The New York Post that the fashion designer wanted him to “get clean” before he could move back in with his family.
“It was known that he was struggling to stay sober and Mimi had given him some tough love and told him he needed some time away from the kids and to get straight again,” said a Hollywood source said.
Hoffman predicted his own death upon starting his most recent rehab attempt.
NEW York police investigating the death of Oscar-winner actor Philip Seymour Hoffman have arrested four suspected drug dealers.
The New York Post reports that police raided a Manhattan address around 7:30pm Tuesday after a tip-off, and arrested three men and a woman.
Police arrested Robert Vineberg, 57, Thomas Kushman 48, and charged them with felony drug possession.
Two others, Max Rosenblum and Juliana Luchkiw, both 22, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor drug possession, the New York Post reports.
According to The New York Post, he was spotted with two drug dealers outside a D'Agostino's supermarket near his West Village apartment on Saturday night at about 8pm local time.
Law enforcement sources told the paper he purchased about US$1,000 ($1,120) worth of heroin and cocaine.
