Manhattan, New York - Elle Canada editor L'Wren Scott, long time girl friend of Rolling Stones band leader Mick Jagger, was discovered dead in her apartment. While the investigation is ongoing, police are considering her death a suicide. It seems that at 8:30AM on Monday, Mrs. Scott text messaged her assistant to swing by her apartment at 10:00AM. When the assistant arrived, she discovered that Mrs. Scott had hung herself. It is not clear if she left a suicide note behind.
Jagger himself had only recently arrived in Perth, Australia where he and his longtime band mates were going to launch their world tour. News of Scott's death has hit Jagger hard. By all accounts, he is bereft and deeply grieving. No one expects the proverbial show to go on with a tour cancellation is considered highly likely. Only yesterday, Jagger had tweeted a photograph of himself taking in the sun at the local beach.
It isn't known what the motive for suicide would be, but Scott's fashion company, LS Fashion Ltd, was millions of dollars in the red. It had been suffering operating losses since 2012. Those close to her said she was embarrassed that at her company's failure.
Scott's death has prompted a flood of condolence messages on social media from leading designers and high-profile clients of Scott's clothing line.
Mick's ex-wife Bianca Jagger tweeted: "Heartbroken to learn of the loss of the lovely and talented L'Wren Scott. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May she rest in peace."
Jagger’s assets are estimated at £200 while Scott's was £1.1, but she owed £4.6 in debts. Despite her money problems, no one close to her saw any warning signs. Her money problems were growing severe as she was unable to display her fashion designs during London Fashion Week due to an in ability to finance the display.
Scott was the second major fashion designer to die unexpectedly in recent years. British designer Alexander McQueen (Gucci), who had suffered from depression, committed suicide in London in February 2010 at the age of 40.
British fashion editor Isabella Blow also took her own life in 2007 at the age of 48.
