Shaquille O’Neal posts selfie to make fun of disadvantaged fan
Shaquille O’Neal thought it would be funny to take a selfie and post it alongside one of his fans photos. The problem was that Shaq was mocking one of his fans who has a rare disease called ectodermal dysplasia. The disorder caused the man to lose hair and teeth, and the Shaq fan said he has been made fun of since he was a small child.
Jamal Binion was surprised that Shaquille O’Neal would post such a photo. The post got over 14,000 likes including from University of Michigan athlete Trey Burke and rapper Waka Flocka Flame. O’Neal was known as a charitable athlete who helped disadvantaged children. The selfie has been removed from O’Neal’s profile; however, Binion had already seen it and the damage was done.
Although Binion is used to being teased about his disorder, he was hurt by Shaq’s action. He said it was more than he could stand. He once respected the famous basketball player, but, for this fan and many others who have had to bear teasing from others, it was not funny and O’Neal may have lost a huge portion of his fan base because of the decision to post the photos in a public forum.
News reporters attempted to contact O’Neal about the selfie, but he did not respond. Binion told reporters that he decided long ago not to allow the teasing to keep him down. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he started a campaign to help fight bullies. The campaign is called Hug Don’t Judge and the message is loud and clear. He said if he let it get to him, he would only get hurt and depressed. It is better to turn a bad situation into something good and useful. His inspiration may be just what another child needs to get through the day.
