Former Letter of Complaint by Ex-Beatle John Lennon Sells for £53,000

Ex-Beatle John Lennon was the iconic leader of the Beatles who shaped and defined music during the 1960s. Despite his tragic death in December 1980, he remains a popular figure and inspiration in the world of music. His popularity has never been questioned. In fact, his share of royalties from Beatles music brings in millions per year to his estate. However, it appears that his popularity has exceeded analyst expectation. This is because on March 22, a handwritten letter of complaint to now imprisoned music director Phil Spector has sold at auction for £53,000 ($84,000 USD).

The note had been appraised at a value of £4,000-£6,000 before auction bids were accepted. It isn’t every day that expert appraisals turn out to be so far off the mark. So what does the note say? It was Lennon’s response to an attempt by management of the recording studio he was working at to evict him and his crew for literally taking a piss on the recording console. Lennon did not mince any words when he laid the blame for the behavior on his fellow beer buddy Harry Nielson and the late Keith Moon, drummer for the Who.

In addition, Lennon makes the point that he is not a nanny who has to tend to adult rock stars. He suggests Phil Spector run interference with studio management and get them to bill Capitol Records, under which his Apple Records label functioned, for the cost of the repair. The letter was written during the time frame of 1973 to 1975 during which time he was separated from his wife Yoko Ono and living with Chinese beauty May Pang. The short note reveals a slice of a day in the life of a rock ‘n’ roll giant.
