Voluntary Recall of OTC Drugs by Vita Health Expanded

This has certainly been Canada's year of pharmaceutical boo-boos when it comes to contraceptives and over-the-counter cold & flu medicines.

First the billion dollar pharmaceutical maker of contraceptives Apotex Inc. managed to let some placebos get into the bottles they sell. They were followed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals in August for the same mistake: placebos.

Now, Vita Health, which makes OTC medicines for cold & flu symptoms, issued a voluntary recall in August when they noticed that an omission in the labeling of their "Personnelle Cold and Flu-in-One Extra Strength" and "Personnelle Flu Relief" products did not have dosage instructions inside the inner box. While the containers did contain that information, Vita Health issued a recall as a precaution.

Unfortunately, Vita Health discovered that the boo-boo was greater than they had imagined and have now expanded the recall to include their "Personnelle Ultra Headache Relief" and "Personnelle Cold and Flu-in-One Extra Strength Convenience Pack" products.

At least no one has been hurt in any of the high profile recalls. Better that someone's ego get a bit bruised than someone suffer harm to their health. It should be noted that Vita Health moved into swift action upon learning of the incorrect labeling of their products.

The following lots are included in this recall:

Below is the press release from Health Canada:

Health Canada wishes to inform Canadians that Vita Health Products Inc. has voluntarily recalled a variety of health products from the Canadian market because of labelling issues. The recalled products pose a risk to health because the labels contain errors such as suggesting packages are child resistant when they are not, or are missing warning statements for consumers with allergies or existing medical conditions.

The products include “over-the-counter” and a natural health product such as anti-inflammatory, cold and flu, allergy and sinus, and acetaminophen medications.

Vita Health is reviewing its product labels and putting actions in place to address the labelling issues. Health Canada has not received any information suggesting the quality of the products on the list below is affected.

If you have used or purchased a Vita Health product and are concerned about its impact on your health, please consult your healthcare practitioner. Consumers are also encouraged to return the product to the place of purchase or call Vita Health at 1-800-665-8820, Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. EDT for further instruction.

Health Canada is monitoring the recalls by Vita Health and will continue to provide updates to Canadians as warranted. Canadians can monitor the table below for additions to the list of recalled products. The table includes a complete list of products recalled by Vita Health to date.
