Mariah Carey Slammed For Performing For Angolan Dictator
According to ABC News, the singer accepted more than 1 million dollars for the two hour event. The concert was sponsored by Unitel, a mobile phone company owned by Santos’ daughter, according to the Human Rights Foundation.
Dos Santos has been president of Angola since 1979. During that time he has ordered the death of many politicians, activists, and journalists who have spoken out against his rule.
This is not the first time that Carey has performed for a dictator. The Washington Post reports that she performed for Libya’s Moammar Gaddafi in 2009. She then later apologized for her show in Libya, saying, “I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess.”
According to ABC News, other pop artists have performed for the Gaddafi family including Beyonce, Usher, and 50 Cent. The artists reportedly donated their earnings from those performances.
Other pop stars performing for dictators include Jennifer Lopez. Earlier this year, she sang for the president of Turkmenistan which the Human Rights Watch considers one of the world’s most repressed countries. J-Lo later apologized.
