Police Shoot Former Florida A&M Football Player Dead in Use of Excessive Force

Charlotte, NC – 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell was killed early Sunday morning after he sought for help following a car accident. According to reports, Ferrell, who is a young black man, accidentally crashed his car into a tree. The accident caused enough damage to the vehicle that the former safety for Florida A&M University had to escape through the backseat window.

Ferrell must have been experiencing pain from his injuries and went to a nearby house seeking help and pounded on the door to draw the attention of the occupants since it was roughly 2:00AM. A woman answered the door believing her husband was returning home late from work, but when she saw Ferrell, she immediately closed the door and phoned 911 claiming a home invasion was taking place.

Upon the arrival of officers, Ferrell ran to them quite likely seeking help and they officers interpreted his behavior as an intent to assault them. They struck Ferrell with a taser but when that failed to stop him, one officer discharged his firearm at Ferrell hitting him multiple times and killing him. The officer, Randall Kerrick, has now been charged with voluntary manslaughter and was arrested. He is now out on a $50,000 bail and awaiting trial.
