Russell Brand Too Much Guantanamo, Banned

Russell Brand: Too rude for Gitmo

Shaker Aamer, a 12 year prisoner in the American prison camp Guantanamo Bay, now cannot spend his leisure time reading what he wishes. Aamer is the last of the British detainees, picked up outside of Kabul in 2001, and is now unable to enjoy the satirical humor of English actor Russell Brand and his new biography, “Booky Wook 2”.

Aamer uses reading to keep his spirits up and has cited his friend, Clive Smith, as a big help in bring him new literature to read. The two have made a game, it seems, of seeing what fiction will be let through the Gitmo censor list. “1984” by George Orwell was allowed a pass. “Booky Wook 2” was not.

Aamer jokes that: “The US military is solicitous of my sensitive nature, and wants to protect me from swearing. These are the same people who say that all of us at Guantanamo are dedicated terrorists.”

While the strength of Brand’s writing ability is arguable it is hard not to imagine that this is a great bit of publicity for the rock’n’roll comedian who thrives on controversy. Oh, it’s banned at Gitmo? That just means more books flying off of the shelf.
