Transport Driver Charged After Near-Crash With Hockey Team Bus Near Sudbury

Only a few days after the fact, the driver of the tractor trailer who slammed into the side of a college hockey team bus that was taking the team members home has been formally charged by police with careless driving. This particular charge not only carries a mandatory fine of $490, but it also adds six demerit points to the driver’s license on a first offense.

The driver, a 57 year old man from Owen Sound was driving his truck when he veered into the lane that the bus was occupying and slammed into its side. Even after the windows of the bus was shattered, the woman who was driving the bus was still able to keep the bus on the road, which likely saved the lives of the team members who were on board the bus. After the crash, a second bus was called to the location to take the team members the remaining amount of the trip home, and everyone got home safely.

At the end of the day, the only person on the bus who was injured in any way was the bus driver, which is almost certainly why the charges against the man who slammed into the bus are relatively low. The damage could be far worse, and everyone involved is extremely lucky that it was not. The bus driver in particular, as well as the company who owned the bus, Tisdale Bus lines, deserve a great amount of credit for fast thinking and the ability to react to a rapidly evolving incident.
