will.i.am admits to stealing beat for new track
On April 23, seven-time Grammy Award-winning rapper and producer Will.i.am, aka. William Adams, ended days of speculation with his confession that he had used another artist’s beat sample without receiving permission to do so.
The 38-year-old, former Black Eyed Peas frontman admitted to violating copyright laws by sampling beats from Russian DJ Arty, for his Chris Brown collaboration “Let’s Go.” The beats used without permission are from Arty’s song, entitled “Rebound.”
Adams tried to admonish himself of the situation, explaining that a year of collaborating with Arty ended up with no better musical option than using “Rebound” as a base layer for the song. Though he intentioned for Arty to develop something “new” for the lyrics, the end result was inevitable, as Adams has originally used “Rebound” as his inspiration for writing it.
It is not known if Arty plans further action, in regards to the copyright infringement.
Will.i.am is the the former faceplate of the multiple award-winning group Black Eyed Peas. After a run that secured seven Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, a Billboard Music Award, Teen Choice Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, and three World Music Awards, the group split and Adams turned his focus toward producing. He has worked with several entertainers in that capacity, including Britney Spears and Justin Bieber.
