Russian strongman Vladmir Putin has angered gay rights organizations globally with the passage of censorship law this past July 29.
The law makes it a criminal offense to both Russians and tourists to discuss "nontraditional relationships" in the presence of minors IE gay relationships. Putin has gone out of his way to target homosexuals as the cause of Russia's moral collapse and population decline. It is odd that in a country where the rate of abortions per woman is the highest in the world (three by age 25), that homosexuals would be targeted.
The law has provoked groups into calling for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. However, the TV host who was fired earlier this year for announcing his homosexuality on the air, Anton Krasovsky, is asking for the international community to cease calls for a boycott. Krasovsky states that the Olympics are about the world community and as such are bigger than Vladmir Putin.
"I’m gay, and I’m just the same person as you, my dear audience, as President Putin, as Prime Minister Medvedev and the deputies of our Duma," the former anchor told the television audience on his final broadcast.
According to Krasovsky, a boycott targeted at punishing the Russian president would actually impact the nation's homosexual population which he estimates at 7 million. Therefore, Krasovsky states that any such boycott would be counter-productive because it would boycott against the very gay population in need of support.
"Russian gay people need international support, but international support is not a boycott of Sochi Olympic games, because Olympic games is an international event," Krasovsky told CNN. "It's not a Russian event, it's not a personal event of Putin, it's an event of millions and millions of people ... 7 million people in Russia are gay. If you want to boycott Olympic games in Russia, you're trying to boycott 7 million gay people in Russia. You want to boycott me."
