This is a sad story of a man with a very unique name. Batman bin Suparman (Batman, son of Superman) found fame in 2008 when his scanned ID found its way on the world-wide web. The name itself is interesting. Suparman is a common surname. It's from a Sanskrit word meaning 'good, fortunate'. Batman, however, is a more unique name. There is no similarity between it and the local languages. This is a name that was imported from the well known and very popular D.C. Comics superhero. Batman has even been culturally incorporated somewhat into local legends of Lutung Kasarung, a prince who disguised himself as a monkey.
Batman bin Suparman, a 23 year old man from Singapore, was sentenced to two years and nine months in jail on Monday.
He was convicted of a number of crimes. First, he was arrested for stealing roughly 400$ from a store on while being captured on surveillance tape. Then, he made off with his brother's ATM card and helped himself to nearly 680$ of goods on his brother's dime. Afterward, he pleaded guilty to other charges of theft and heroin use. One would think that Batman would not be proud of his namesake.
A Facebook fan page called ‘Batman bin Suparman Fan Club’ has gathered more than 11,000 likes. One post by a user suggested he 'legally changed his name to be a misspelled DC character hybrid'.
Other users on the website said he could use his time in jail to 'catch up on all your comic book reading', while another said: 'He's only in jail for training, like at the beginning of Batman Begins'.
And Kevin Yang said: 'Our idol has been jailed! Someone break him out of prison!'
Batman son of Suparman might seem like an odd name but other amusing if not ill-advised name changes are just as amusing. A Seattle man Jason Michael Burrows changed his name to 'Jason Megatron Burrows' in homage to the Decepticon leader of the Transformers ... and perhaps in response to Scott Nall, a member of Ohio's 5694th National Guard Unit in Mansfield, becoming 'Optimus Prime' a few years earlier on his 30th birthday.
A teenager in the Uk changed his name to 'Captain Fantastic Faster Than Superman Spiderman Batman Wolverine Hulk And The Flash Combined'.
According to the Telegraph, the record-breaking name, now thought to be the world's longest, was the idea of music graduate George Garratt, 19.
He changed his name by deed poll online for £10 last week.
Captain Fantastic said: "I wanted to be unique.
"I decided upon a theme of superheroes."
