Sochi, Russian - In a move that is heightening legitimate concerns that Russian security for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games is inadequate, authorities have announced that one of 4 known Black Widow female suicide bombers has slipped past security in this Black Sea city of 328,000 people.
Specifically, police and anti-terrorist units are now searching for Ruzanna Ibragimova who is now believed to be somewhere in the city. Workers in surrounding hotels have confirmed that posters of Ibragimova have been put up in multiple locations in what is considered an "urgent" search for the Islamic suicide bomber. She is believed to be from the troubled province of Dagestan with a desire for revenge. Her husband was killed in a gunfight with police last year.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Olympic Committee reacted to the revelation by saying that the safety of Team USA is their "top priority."
"As is always the case, we are working with the U.S. Department of State, the local organizers and the relevant law enforcement agencies in an effort to ensure that our delegation and other Americans traveling to Sochi are safe," spokesperson Patrick Sandusky said.
Authorities believe the black widow suicide bomber is part of the terror network called Caucasus Emirate which is disturbing since that is the group which has vowed to strike at Sochi games.
"The fact that one individual either was able to stay in the area before the ring of steel went up or get through it really raises questions about the strength of the Russia security apparatus," said Christopher Swift, a Georgetown University professor who has studied militant groups in the North Caucasus.
"The specific worry is that she's a woman and because of that it's easier for women to infiltrate indoor or outdoor venues, that she could be a bomb carrier."
As far as identifying Ibragimova goes, she is said to have an inability to bend her left arm and walks with a noticeable limp. She also has a 10 cm long (~4 inch) scar on across her left cheek. It is a wonder how someone who seemingly has mobility issues made it past Russian security.
