Egytian Mother and Daughters Killed in “Honor Crime”

Security officials in Egypt report that as many as 10 male relatives have been involved in an “honor killing” of a mother and her two daughters for alleged moral offenses committed by the three women. The men took the severe action of killing the three women because they were suspected of having participated in illicit romantic affairs and only their swift deaths could avoid having their families suffer dishonor once their supposed crimes were publicly revealed. The bodies of the three victims, wrapped in blankets and weighted down with stones, were found near the Nile River in the Egyptian city of Luxor.

Egyptian officials would not release the names of the male relatives involved in the killings nor offer the identities of the three dead women.

Although “honor killings” have long been common in more conservative areas of the country, the practice is considered by many in the 21st century to be barbaric and is actually against Eqyptian law. But many women in the southern region of the nation are still subject to severe scrutiny by male relatives, who take it upon themselves to murder any female relative who is either caught or even suspected of having had extramarital sexual relations.
