A Breaking Bad Tribute: Blue Meth in New Mexico
A popular crime drama starts up a new drug trend in New Mexico. Blue methamphetamine has been seen circulating through the larger area of New Mexico, and large quantities have been seized in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Does this mean there is a real Walter White living in Albuquerque?
The methamphetamine is in fact a hoax used by drug distributors to create a brand, save on costs, and hook new users. The quality of the product isn’t nearly on par with the fabled Walter White as much of the methamphetamine is produced locally within the United States, transported over to Mexico, where it is cut to look blue with dangerous chemicals. Many people who have used this designer methamphetamine have gotten very ill, yet the product is still more addictive than regular methamphetamine due to the additives.
This phenomenon isn’t uncommon as red methamphetamine has existed and been sold before. The popularity of the classic AMC show “Breaking Bad” featuring a school teacher turned meth producer is what is blamed for the start of this blue meth trend. Many New Mexico residents who have never tried the drug before are willing to try the blue meth because it is seen as sexy and cool, largely because it was on television.
