First Annual Amputee Soccer Match Turns into Melee

Westerlo, Antwerp – in what was designed to be a first of a kind soccer match between two longtime rivals, Holland and Belgium, descended from a close match to a rough-housing melee, reports the Daily Mail.

The game was tied Saturday at 3 goals each when a single act of unsportsman-like conduct turned the game into a street brawl.

A player from the Belgium team used his only leg to flatten a member of the Dutch team. That’s all it took. From there, the team players broke out into fighting and did not hesitate to use their aluminum crutches as weapons against each other. Spectators did not refrain themselves either as they too joined the din. The embarrassing behavior was caught on camera.

The match was to have been a goodwill effort of both nations and lead to other international matches.

Marnix Huys of the Belgian team still believes that on balance the games achieved their objectives. Huys concurs that the fights were inappropriate but that they did not rise to the level of abrogating what was a well-played match. He said the match made each person stronger.

Each field player on the teams were missing one leg. Goalies were missing only an arm.
