Israeli Filmmaker Bringing Anne Frank’s Diary to Silver Screen

The secret diary that Anne Frank kept during World War II will gain a wider audience when Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ari Folman creates a new movie about the young Jewish girl.

Her story has already been told on screen as well as on Broadway, but the Israeli director says that the story of her famous diary must now be retold to a new generation unfamiliar with her struggles and her bravery. Frank and her family were eventually discovered by the Nazis in the hiding place she describes so vividly in her writings and she was taken to the German Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where she died in 1945 at the age of 15.

Folman says that his new movie project focusing on Anne Frank’s inspiring story presents an artistic challenge but one that offer the opportunity to keep her story and her struggle for freedom alive for the Millennial Generation, many of whose parents were not even alive when World War II broke out.

Folman has the support of the Anne Frank Fonds Charity for his new film, which is expected to be in development sometime in 2014.

There has not yet been any announcement regarding cast members or an expected release date.
