Monkey named after “Big Bang Theory” character

A recent addition to the Columbus Zoo has been named after the eccentric scientist, Sheldon Cooper, from the popular hit TV series, “The Big Bang Theory.” The newest Sheldon Copper, a colobus monkey, was born last month on March 3, 2013 at the Columbus Zoo in Powell, Ohio. Avid fans of the show, zoo keepers thought that that “The Big Bang” would make an amusing theme for naming their next set of newborns.

Born to parents Claire and Radi, little Sheldon Cooper with have a lot to live up to in his name. Like all colobus monkeys, Sheldon was born all white. On average, most colobus monkeys will begin to develop their coloring around 6 months of age, however, according to zoo keepers, at just a little over one month old, Sheldon is already starting to develop his adult coloring. Perhaps a sign of living up to the advanced intelligence of the real Sheldon Cooper?

March was a busy month for the Columbus Zoo, with Sheldon being the first of several births. One April 12, two red river hogs were born, as well as a black duiker, a type of antelope found in parts of Africa, which was born earlier in the month.
