Bear Walks Into A Bar

A bear walks into a bar…. No, it’s not a punch line. Patrons at a Colorado bar may have been wondering what the bartender put into their drinks. Lonagins Bar, located in Estes Park, has a carved bear mascot that greets customers upon their arrival. However, last week that mascot was upstaged by the real thing. A black bear entered the bar tempted by the aromas and in search of food.

Estes Park is no stranger to this. During the past few months there have been several black bear sightings as well as some near misses.

Passerby Daniel Lyell said he spotted the bear going from garbage bin to garbage bin in the parking lot.

“I wanted a photo, and before I knew it, he was headed into Lonigans,” Lyell said. “I went in after him and tried to alert the patrons by yelling ‘bear’ but no one noticed. I called for the bear when he was just about to enter the middle bar area. He hesitated and then listened to me the second time. He turned around and went out the door behind me.”

“Nobody even knew it was there,” Lonigans owner David Callahan told the newspaper. “I just missed seeing it. I was cleaning up and had just taken out the trash.”

One resident took pictures of a black bear napping on the front lawn while another bear entered a home searching for a snack. One bear who had been trapped managed to escape capture.

Some are wondering whether the lounge loving bear may have also recently visited a chocolate shop in town. According to the Estes Park Trail Gazette, a patron at Lonagins Bar saw the bear approaching the middle section of the bar and called to other patrons who promptly ignored him. The owner of the bar wasn’t surprised after seeing the surveillance video since bears have been living in the Rocky Mountains longer than people.

The bar plans on offering a commemorative shot for the thirsty bear.
