Beaver Attack Leaves Fisherman Dead
A fisherman in eastern Europe who got too close for comfort to a beaver while trying to take a photograph of the creature was bitten by the beaver. The attack unfortunately proved deadly as the beaver severed the man’s artery and he bled to death before his companions could secure emergency medical help for him. The tragic incident occurred at Lake Shestakov in Belarus. The fisherman was apparently intrigued after seeing a beaver on the shoreline and approached it, wanting to capture the image with a photograph. The startled beaver bit him on the thigh, causing uncontrollable bleeding which led to the man’s death.
Fishermen and others who often encounter creatures in the wild often forget that they are unpredictable. Beavers have such strong teeth with such a powerful bite that they are capable of breaking a tree trunk or limb in half. Beavers and fishermen usually live peacefully in co-existence when they encounter each other in nature, although beavers who are rabid have been know to aggressively attack people without provocation. The identity of the unfortunate fisherman who died as a result of the beaver bite has not been released. It is unknown whether or not officials have been able to capture the creature to test it for rabies.
Not the fist beaver
A rabid beaver attacked Boy Scout troop leader Norman Brousseau as he was swimming in the Delaware River with four scouts last July.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports the beaver swam between the man’s legs and bit him on the torso, arm, hand, leg and buttocks.
The Scouts managed to pull Brousseau to shore and beat the beaver to death with rocks.
Sharon Brown a biologist and director of Beavers: Wetlands & Wildlife who has raised and aided beavers for more than 20 years assures the public that beavers are still vegetarian and attacks are not on the rise, reports the Washington Examiner.
“Beaver attacks are not on the rise,” she said. “It’s just not something beavers usually do.
A video was posted online from Russia of another man being attacked by a beaver.
