Belgian Man Undergoes Assisted Suicide After Failed Sex Change

44-year-old Verhelst never got to experience the peace of being accepted by his family for simply being himself. Born a female by the name of Nancy, her family treated her as an outcast. She recalled being given a bedroom above the garage which in her family apparently underscored the rejection and indifference towards her. When questioning her mother as to why her brothers were received with such love, she was told that such treatment would be hers too if she had just been born a boy.

Rejection fueled Nancy’s sex change to become Nathan Verhelst. However, the removal of his female breasts failed to produce the manlike bosom he believed he needed. More importantly, the gender change operation to give him a male penis had failed and his body was showing signs of rejecting the organ. What was the man to do now? However, “none of these operations worked as desired”, he said. “I was ready to celebrate my new birth, but when I looked in the mirror, I was disgusted with myself. My new breasts did not match my expectations and my new penis had symptoms of rejection. I do not want to be a monster.”

In his agony, Mr. Verhelst turned to Wim Distelmans, an ecologist who has performed euthanasia, and as per his wishes, he had his life taken. Dr. Distelmans explained that his patient was undergoing extreme psychological pain and this justified turning to death for release. He stressed that it was not a momentary decision because his patient received the mandated six months of counseling prior to the death procedure.

Explaining his decision hours before his death, Verhelst said he was “the girl that nobody wanted”.

He told Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper: “While my brothers were celebrated, I got a storage room above the garage as a bedroom. ‘If only you had been a boy’, my mother complained. I was tolerated, nothing more.”
