Beyoncé Throws a Shade at Rowland in Old Interview Clip

Before Beyoncé Knowles became a household name in her own right, she was part of the popular R&B trio known as Destiny’s Child. In testament to their popularity, the group has sold over 60 million records making them one of the most successful girl groups and R&B groups of all time.

Now, an old video clip of the group being interviewed has emerged wherein band member Kelly Rowland asserts that she is the second lead vocalist in the three-woman singing act. That assertion draws a wide-eyed look from a young and lovely Knowles who is then seen “throwing a shade” at Rowland. In slang terms, “throwing a shade” is to display attitude, disbelief, or disrespect at a person or statement the person has made.

Obviously, there was competition between the singers as there is within most groups. Rowland has gone on to have a successful solo career since the group disbanded in 2005. She has sold over 25 million records. That is an accomplishment for any artist. For Beyoncé, she’s gone on to greater success selling 118 million records in her solo career. The two still collaborate together and were seen reunited for the 2013 Super Bowl half-time event.
