Embattled Chinese Politician Bo Xilai to Appeal Verdict

64-year-old former Chinese politician Bo Xilai was sentenced to life in prison for corruption in a web of various and sundry crimes involving murder, sex, and money. Add to that the beautiful actress Zhang Ziyi was reported to have slept with Xilai a total of time times over the period 2007 – 2011 and was paid $110 million. The actress denies the allegations.

Regardless, the court found the populist leader Xilai guilty and handed down a harsh sentence to him which also carried the penalty of stripping him of all his assets. Predictably, he has sought an appeal. Given that the state has already taken away everything from him down to his last yuan, he’s got nothing more to lose.

However, there does not appear to be any real possibility that his sentence will be overturned given that the ruling Politburo, which is no fan of Xilai, exerts undue influence over the judiciary. In addition, members of the judiciary were open about their belief in his guilt months ago. The one thing Xilai has going for him is his tenacity and popularity.

During his trial, Xilai gave an impassioned speech regarding his innocence that would have made legendary philosopher Socrates proud. No date has been announced as to when the appeal will be heard.
