Butcher selling pork from marijuana-fed pigs
Following the legalization of marijuana as a recreational drug in Washington State butcher William Von Schneidua has begun selling pork from pigs fed on marijuana production waste products. With the industry in recreational marijuana production just starting in Washington the disposal of waste material from marijuana plants is one of the major problems for farmers. In response to this problem some marijuana farmers have begun feeding their animals the waste stems and leaves from harvested marijuana plants; in March 2013 Von Schneidau held a five course meal at his Pike Place store to show the merits of marijuana fed pork and sold the remainder of the meat to his customers.
Von Schneidau purchased his marijuana fed pork from farmer Susannah Gross who now legally grows marijuana under Washington’s strict laws for growers. She decided to feed her pigs the waste products from her marijuana crop when lawmakers stated it was legal to dispose of marijuana byproducts in food waste, according to Gross the larger appetite of the pot fed pigs led to a weight gain of 20 to 30 pounds more than those fed on regular food. Despite Washington State and other U.S. states, including Colorado making marijuana legal as a recreational drug it is still illegal under federal law.
