The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) is an association of paediatricians working together to promote matters of health for both children & young people in the areas of health care, research, education, and advocacy.

The group devotes its efforts in the areas of advocacy, public education, professional education, and monitoring rare diseases.

However, the CPS has now launched a nationwide campaign for the government to compel everyone who rides a bicycle to wear a helmet regardless of age. The CPS is also not wasting any time either. They have called on the government to pass the legislation in time for the 2014 bicycling season.

The group cites the trauma caused to the brain in bicycling-related injuries annually. Dr. Hagel, the co-author of the association’s official statement calling for the legislation, states that adults need to be compelled to wear helmet’s to set a good example for their children.

Essentially, the CPS believes the “Do as I say and not as I do” practice that adults give children regarding the need of wearing helmets encourages some children to mimic their parent’s poor example. Currently, only four of Canada’s provinces have helmet laws acceptable to the CPS, three others have the laws apply only to children and six have no helmet laws in force at all.
