Godin was the prime suspect in the murders that took the lives of both his daughters, his ex-wife and her new boyfriend. The slayings took place in separate locations with ex-wife, 44-year-old Nancy Samson and her partner, 39-year-old Benoit Daigle, found dead in St-Croix, and daughters Medora and Beatrice discovered with Godin in St-Isidore. Godin had attempted suicide while in the house with his deceased daughters.
Due to his precarious medical condition, Godin was never formally charged with the murders. While the entire motive is still unclear, police suspect there may have been a love triangle situation.
The Godin case was one of several domestic homicides to occur in Quebec in February, which left nine people dead in two weeks. In one case, a reservist in the military was accused of killing his parents, while in another, a teenaged girl and her boyfriend were murdered by another boy who was obssessed with her. Some experts have theorized the crimes may be copycat killings.
