Zeta-Jones Enters Bipolar Disorder Treatment Facility

A spokesman for actress Catherine Zeta-Jones reveals that she has voluntarily entered into a treatment facility to help monitor her ongoing bipolar disorder condition.

“Catherine has proactively checked into a health care facility,” her rep, Cece Yorke, tells PEOPLE. “Previously Catherine has said that she is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner.”

The Oscar-winning wife of actor Michael Douglas, who has battled his own serious health issues and recently beat throat cancer, says she felt it was the right time to have doctors monitor whether or not her current medication must be adjusted in order to improve her health.

It has been two years since Zeta-Jones spent time in an East Coast mental health facility for treatment of the disease, which causes unexplained mood swings along with periods of depression.

When she first acknowledged that she was suffering from bipolar disorder, Zeta-Jones expressed the hope that her public admission would help to educate the public at large as to what the disorder was all about in addition to encouraging even one individual with the same symptoms to seek medical help.

Despite being very open about her condition since, during an interview with the Today Show in 2012, the mother-of-two insisted she ‘never wanted to become the poster child” – and does not want to be seen as a victim.

She said: “You know what? I’m sick of talking about it because I never wanted to be the poster child for this [bipolar].

“I never wanted this to come out publicly. It came out,” she added emphatically.
Talking about how she copes with the illness she went on: “I dealt with it in the best way I could and that was just saying: “”Hey, I’m bipolar.” Everyone has things going on and we deal with them as best we can.

Very matter of factly, Zeta-Jones continued: ‘We can’t go jump from the rooftops shouting about I have this, look at me, victim. No.’

‘We all have issues in our life and I’m really lucky that I have great friends, great support and that’s all I can do.’

Prior to entering a treatment facility last month, Zeta-Jones accompanied Douglas to the recent gala event in New York City honoring Barbra Streisand, although Douglas was seen going stag to the annual Washington, DC correspondents dinner. There was no singular incident that prompted her return to treatment other than a commitment to keep her condition under medical supervision.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, about 1% of Canadians will experience bipolar disorder (or “manic depression”).
