Swedish Convict Escapes To See Dentist
A toothache became far too much to handle for a Swedish prisoner who decided to make a bold escape from jail to visit a local dentist before turning himself in shortly thereafter. The 51 year old inmate from Östragård open prison took off from the prison grounds and immediately made his way to a local dentist who promptly treated his tooth and released him.
Swedish open prisons are famously lax in their security measures, and those who transgress the law in Sweden are treated more as candidates for rehabilitation than targets for punishment. Still, prison officials were not happy about the inmate’s flaunting of their authority. Östragård guards responded with a sternly worded warning to the inmate, and tacked on an additional day to his month-long sentence.
While prison breaks usually consist of dramatic attempts by hardened criminals to flee toward freedom and future anonymity, this inmate just wanted his terrible pain taken care of as quickly as possible. When asked about running from captivity the inmate told the local Dagens Nyheter newspaper, “My whole face was swollen. I just couldn’t stand it any more”. Few who have experienced such a masticating malady could blame him.
