Crowdfunding Website Kickstart Reaches $1B in Pledges

Kickstarter, the crowdfunding website of choice, has announced that it has now reached the one billion dollar milestone in pledges from a total of 5.7 million donors. That breaks down to an average of $175.44 per donor. Over $663 million of the donations have come from the United States with Wednesday being the best day to raise cash.

Kickstarter says that half that amount has been pledged over the past year as Kickstarter has gained traction as a place of last resort where dreams can come true. The most celebrated project to date has been the upcoming big screen adaption to the cult classic TV series “Veronica Mars” starring Kristen Bell. Fans of the show have long wanted to see the series return as a motion picture. However, Rob Thomas, the show’s creator, was unable to persuade movie studios to put up the capital to fund the movie.

Thomas then put fans to the test by launching a Kickstarter campaign with the vow that if $2 million could be raised in 30 days the project would become a reality. The show hit that mark in 10 hours and went on to receive $5.7 million in pledges. The film is set for release on March 14, 2014.
