Cruise Ship Adrift: Passengers Will Receive Refunds

Carnival Cruise Triumph Adrift: Passengers Will Receive Refunds

For passengers of Carnival Cruise Triumph, this trip is no triumph. Triumph departed from Galveston, Texas on February 7 and was scheduled to return to Galveston on February 11.

Unfortunately, an engine room caught fire Sunday stranding the 3,143 passengers 150 miles off the coast of Mexico. Automatic extinguishers quickly put out the fire and no passengers were injured.

“The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room. At this time, the fire is fully extinguished,” Carnival said in a statement.

The Carnival Ship Elation responded with provisions to the disabled cruise ship and it’s passengers.

The ship is being closely monitored by the U.S. Coast Guard who state tug boats will reach the Triumph at approximately noon on Monday. Stranded passengers should be arriving in Progresso sometime Wednesday.

Passengers haven’t had electricity, hot running water, hot food, phone service or air conditioning for over two days and there have been limited bathroom facilities available.

According to a USA Today report, a passenger in need of dialysis will be transferred off the Triumph later today to the Carnival Legend, which will then transfer the passenger to Cozumel, Mexico.

Carnival promises a full refund inclusive of gratuities and any transportation expenses as well as a free cruise in the future for all passengers.

According to The Toronto Sun, the next two voyages of Carnival Triumph, scheduled to depart today and Saturday, Feb. 16 have been cancelled. Guests scheduled to sail on either of those voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses and a 25 per cent discount on a future three to five-day cruise.

In January last year, the Costa Concordia, a 114,500 tonne luxury cruise ship operated by the Carnival Corp-owned Costa Cruises, capsized and sank off the Tuscan island of Giglio in Italy, killing 32 people.
