Dash Cam Leads to More Charges Against Manitoba Driver

Updated

 on

A dashboard camera video showing a Manitoba driver apparently holding a cellphone in his hand just prior to a crash that occurred near Kenora Ontario has led to additional criminal charges against 36-year old Christopher Lord. According to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, it is illegal for a driver to operate a motor vehicle in the province while holding any hand-held communications device such as a cell phone.

Lord, who resides in La Broquerie, Manitoba, has now been charged with violating that Act. He had already been charged with failure to yield at the scene of the crash, which occurred on March 1 west of Kenora at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 17A. Lord was driving a pick-up truck hauling a huge trailer when he allegedly made a left turn to gain access onto the Highway, directly in front of a vehicle operated on Highway 17 by Sioux Lookout resident Ralph Ireland.

Luckily for Ireland, who had a dash cam operating in his vehicle, the video was examined for further evidence after it was posted on YouTube after the crash. It clearly showed that the driver of the truck who had pulled out in front of Ireland’s vehicle was holding something up to his ear. In addition to Lord suffering minor injuries in the collision, both Ireland and his spouse, who was a passenger in his vehicle, also suffered non-threatening injuries but did not need hospitalization.
