No. 1 Deadbeat Dad Pleads Guilty to Owing Millions in Child Support

Richard Sand, 50, father of three, has pleaded guilty to owning his children more than $1.2 million. Prosecutors branded him “the number one deadbeat dad.” Sand entered his plea in the U.S. District Court in Central Islip in New York.

Sand had failed to pay any child support for any of his three children since 2002. He faces up to four years in prison.

Sand, divorced twice, first fled New York to Florida and then left the country to avoid child support payments.

Prosecutors traced him to Thailand and then lost him. While in the Philippines, Sand turned himself into authorities. Sand was arrested there in November, 2012 and promptly deported to a jail in California.

Sand’s lawyer, Glenn Obedin, claimed that his client was tired of life on the run and wanted to make reparations to his three abandoned children. Both divorced wives and mothers of his children want Sand to be freed from prison as soon as possible in order to get a job and pay what he owes.

Sand will not appeal the court’s decision. Obedin told reporters that Sand looks forward to getting a job as a used car salesman after he is released from prison.
