Demolition Crew Takes Down 380 Ft German Tower: VIDEO
Frankfurt, Germany – The local population in this metropolis of 5.6 million residents were treated to one of the continent’s largest demolitions when a 380-ft tower knows as the University Tower was leveled yesterday. The structure was built in 1972 and didn’t enjoy a very long lifespan as far as edifices go.
The original plan was to dismantle the structure incrementally, but in the end, German officials opted for the “clean break” approach and announced that the entire building would be dropped in a single coordinated explosion. It is estimated that as many as 30,000 onlookers arrived to watch the collapse of a relatively tall structure. The main reason for the accelerated demolition is that locals objected to the original plan because it would prolong the noise and impact traffic.
There was nothing wrong with the building per se. The university had simply moved to a more favorable location and there was no reason to occupy prime real estate with the structure. The plan is for two office buildings to occupy the site of the tower. Frankfurt is to Germany what New York City is financially to America: the capitol. In all, it took 2,095 pounds of explosives to make the tower a memory.
