Diamond Suggests that Beneath the Earth’s Crust is an Ocean of Water
According the middle age Biblical depictions, Satan, the father of all lies, lives in the center of the earth in a fiery realm wherein the red skinned beast with a long pointed tail, horns, and cloven feet totes his pitch fork about and eternally torments the souls of all those who were disobedient to the God’s commands during mortality.
Well, it may be that if he does exist deep down inside the planet, both he and his minions may be more like the DC comic book character Aqua Man because a unique diamond found in Brazil indicates that beneath the hard crust of the earth lies what is described as a “ocean’s worth of water”. The study was published this past Wednesday in the highly quoted interdisciplinary journal called Nature.
The study examines a diamond which contained a statistically significant amount of olivine mineral ringwoodite which is clear indication that there is water inside the transition zone of the planet’s mantle. Diamonds are usually formed at a depth of 150 to 200 km (93 to 124 miles) beneath the earth’s surface. However, “ultradeep” diamonds, those which are found to contain ringwoodite, are formed at depths of 410 to 660 km (255 to 410 miles) deep into the earth.
The diamond in question was small at barely one tenth of a gram in weight. The rare find was purchased for a mere $20 in the Juína region of Central-West Brazil back in 2008. The team considers the find accidental as they were actually searching for another type of mineral at the time.
